How is Your Due Date Calculated?

The most common method for calculating your estimated due date (EDD) is using Naegele's Rule, which is based on a 28-day menstrual cycle. Here's how it works:

  1. Identify the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP).
  2. Add 7 days to that date.
  3. Count forward 9 months.

For example, if your LMP was November 1, 2024, adding 7 days gets you to November 8, 2024. Counting forward 9 months lands you on August 8, 2025, as your estimated due date. However, this method is not always accurate, especially if you have irregular cycles.

Factors Affecting Due Date Accuracy

Several factors can influence the accuracy of your due date calculation:

  • Irregular Menstrual Cycles: Naegele's Rule assumes a 28-day cycle. If your cycles are longer or shorter, the EDD may be off.
  • Uncertainty About LMP: Not remembering the exact date of your LMP can lead to inaccuracies.
  • Ovulation Timing: Ovulation doesn't always occur on day 14 of your cycle.

The Role of Ultrasound in Determining Due Date

An early ultrasound, ideally between 8 and 13 weeks, is the most reliable method for determining gestational age and refining your due date. Ultrasound measurements can provide a more accurate assessment of fetal development, reducing the likelihood of being mislabeled as "post-term."

Can My Due Date Change?

While your initial due date provides a helpful guideline, it's important to remember that it can be adjusted based on ultrasound findings and your doctor's assessment of your pregnancy's progress. Don't be alarmed if your due date shifts slightly; it's a common occurrence.
